To ensure civil society
participation in the implementation of RCH programme, the Ministry of Health and
Family Welfare, Government of India is implementing the Mother NGO (MNGO) Scheme
since 2000. CHETNA has been accredited as a Regional Resource Centre (RRC) for
Gujarat State and the Union Territories of Diu, Daman
and Dadra Nagar Haveli since October 2004. CHETNA RRC (CRRC) is providing
capacity building support to 19 MNGOs and 3 Service NGOs (SNGOs) in 22 districts
of Gujarat state of India.

Role of Service NGOs (SNGOs)
SNGOs implement RCH service
delivery directly in the community in an integrated way, covering a Community

CRRC provided training and
technical support to Six MNGOs on project proposal development out of which 4
MNGOs got approval.
Develop system for Monitoring and Evaluation for RCH programme
Eleven RCH indicators were
prioritised in consultation with the Health and Family Welfare Department,
Gujarat. With support of Foundation for Research in Health Systems, (FRHS),
Ahmedabad, a village health card to collect data at the field level and a system
to monitor output from local to state level were developed. MNGO Coordinators of
23 Districts were trained on basic concepts of monitoring and evaluation
As a follow up, CRRC provided
support to MNGOs in enhancing capacities of 433 coordinators and link workers in
19 Districts for Monitoring & Evaluation. Continued training and guidance to
implement the system was provided to 18 MNGOs of 21 Districts.
During January-February 2009,
CRRC facilitated four workshops to provide a forum to share and learn, enhance
their understanding on planning of health programmes and skills to develop
focused action plans for achieving prioritised indicators. A total of 107 FNGO
and MNGO coordinators participated. Action plans developed for their respective
work areas.
Monitoring Visits
CRRC made field visits to 6
MNGOs and 9 FNGOs to review the performance of MNGOs in terms of support and
capacity building of the field NGOs and liaison with the district and local
health authorities.
Review of the activities
Meetings were held to review
the efforts made by the MNGOs on 29th May, 16-17 December 2008 and 24
November 2009. MNGOs/ FNGOs shared effective strategies implemented by them to
mobilise the community and MNGO wise Action Plan was developed.
District level Review meeting
CRRC provided training and
technical support to 9 MNGOs on data analysis and presentation of achievements
and participated in the annual review meetings of MNGOs at District level.
Maternal Health Study
In partnership with Dai
Sangathan (Association)Gujarat and the People’s Health Movement (PHM), Gujarat,
a block level study on the experiences of women during pregnancy and child birth
was conducted in 9 district of Gujarat. CRRC provided capacity building support
to 10 NGOs on documentation of women's experiences of pregnancy and childbirth.
110 women’s experience has been documented. The data has been analysed and
report was prepared.
Nirogi Bal Varsh
To support the Government of
Gujarat initiative of “Healthy Child Year”, CRRC built capacities of MNGO and
SNGO coordinators during June 2008. The coordinators were oriented on the status
of Child Health, the concept of Healthy Child Year and the technical components
of Child Health and Nutrition. As an outcome, the MNGOs and SNGOs have
integrated focused interventions on Newborn Care, Child health and Nutrition
with the RCH Programme
Celebration of ‘Nirogi Bal Saptaha’
During 14th - 21st
November, 2008 CRRC provided technical support for the celebration of
“Nirogi Bal Saptah” to MNGOs. As an output 78 health checkup camps were
organized in 20 districts. 9841 children between age group of 0-16 years and
2712 pregnant women received health services. About 12,000 community members
participated in various interactive educational activities conducted by the
FNGOs/ MNGOs.
Breast
Feeding week
CRRC provided technical information and
guidance to MNGOs/
FNGOs/ SNGOs for the celebration of Breast Feeding Week during 1st -
7th August 2009. Various awareness and mobilisation activities were
implemented in 17 districts. The total outreach was 10,728 community members. Of
these were 450 pregnant women, 905 women who were breast feeding, 535
adolescents and 442 children and 3089 women.
Nutrition week
With the technical support from CRRC,
campaigns on Nutrition were conducted by MNGOs/ FNGOs/ SNGOs in 18 districts
during 1-7 September 2009. Reached out to 18,000 community members including
1281 women who were pregnant, 1909 who were breastfeeding, 1585 children till 6
years of age, 1275 adolescents and 2386 school students.

On World Food Day - 16
October 2009, CRRC disseminated information regarding ‘Annapurna Yojana’ to all
MNGOs/ SNGOs
School Health Check-up Programme
To support School Health
Check-up Programme of Health & Family Welfare Department, Gujarat State, CRRC
provided guidance to MNGOs of 22 Districts for the mobilisation of school going
children for health check-up and refferal services.
