The state of Gujarat is committed to improving its social development indicators, particularly related to health, nutrition and gender. Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme (2015) is a national initiative aims for convergent action for improving Child sex ratio and related issues of women empowerment over a life-cycle continuum. CHETNA has committed to support the operationalizing of the scheme in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Patan and Mehsana districts of Gujarat. This project is being implemented in partnership with UNICEF-Gujarat and Gender Resource Centre, Gujarat. The three-year project began in June 2018.
The project aims to support the development of convergent district action plans including Gender scorecards; facilitate the meetings of District level Task Force and support the review and planning process; develop capacity building modules of key stakeholders viz. front line workers; Panchayat members; adolescent boys and girls, parents and SHGs.
The project activities equip the Gram Panchayat Development Committees of 25 Gram Panchayats having lowest child sex to include BBBP issues in their development plans, building champions groups of adolescent boys and girls and district level collectives of local leaders, lawyers, doctors for wider promotion of BBBP.
It is expected that the support will lead to effective implementation of the scheme and lead to improvement in sex ratio at birth by 2 points each year in each district, reduction in gender differential in U-5 Child Mortality(IMR and NMR) by 7% points on the baseline value of 2011 and increase girl’s enrollment in secondary education to 82% by 2018-19.
