Current Health and Nutrition Situation in Gujarat, and The Dangs
According to NFHS-5 data, the percentage of stunted (low height-for-age) children is 35% nationally and 39% in Gujarat. The percentage of wasted (low weight-for-height) children is 19% nationally and 25% in Gujarat. The percentage of underweight (low weight-for-age) children is 32% nationally and 38% in Gujarat. In The Dangs, the situation is more severe, with 22.2% of children being severely wasted, more than double the Gujarat average of 10.6%.
Women with a Body Mass Index (BMI) less than 18.5% are considered undernourished. As per NFHS-4, 44.1% of women in Gujarat are undernourished compared to the national average of 22.9%. In The Dangs, 33.7% of women are undernourished.
The prevalence of anaemia among children and adolescents is extremely high. NFHS-5 data shows 77% of adolescent girls in The Dangs are anaemic, indicating a critical need for intervention.
The data from NFHS 5 and the situation analysis conducted by CHETNA in 16 villages of Subir block indicates the need for intervention to improve the health and nutrition status of women, children, and adolescents.
