Target group: Urban slum women of Vasna ward of Ahmedabad city

India is facing a pressing dual burden of malnutrition, with both undernutrition and overnutrition affecting significant portions of the population. Despite notable economic advancements, malnutrition continues to pose a serious challenge, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children and women. These groups often experience deficiencies in essential micronutrients, which have lasting implications for their health and development.

The shift towards more sedentary lifestyles has further intensified this issue, as dietary habits increasingly lean towards processed foods that are high in sugars, unhealthy fats, and salt. This transition exacerbates health problems and creates a pressing need for effective solutions to promote better nutrition.

To address this critical challenge, CHETNA has initiated a transformative project aimed at “Empowering Marginalized Urban Women as Women Nutrition Entrepreneurs” in the urban slums of Vasna ward in Ahmedabad City. This initiative selects 25 women who are trained to become Nutri-entrepreneurs, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to create healthy, nutritious snacks from millets and traditional recipes.

These women not only learn how to prepare these snacks but also gain valuable insights into business management, marketing, and nutrition education. By selling their products in the domestic market, they are not only improving their families’ economic situations but also contributing to the community’s health by providing accessible and nutritious food options.

By empowering women as nutrition leaders, it not only addresses immediate health concerns but also lays the foundation for long-term social and economic development. This initiative is a vital step toward creating healthier communities, fostering economic opportunities, and building a more equitable society for future generations.
